Are you looking to get a website builder? Free software for building websites is out there. There is also easy web site builder software that costs some money but offers extra features for more advanced users. We'll take a brief look at Microsoft's FrontPage and Macromedia's Dreamweaver, the two most popular HTML editing and website builder solutions on the market today. Both of these software programs are WYSIWYG, or "what you see is what you get" - that is, they allow you to see exactly (or almost exactly) what your web pages will look like as you edit them. FrontPage comes with some versions of Microsoft Office and is a popular website publishing program. Perhaps the main weakness of FrontPage is its tendency to add a great deal of extra code. This can make your web pages load more slowly due to their increased file size. However, the folks at Microsoft are continually improving FrontPage, so if you buy it now, you may look forward to getting discounts on new versions of FrontPage. Macromedia Dreamweaver is another web editing and building program. Dreamweaver has become extremely popular because it is so easy to use and tends to not interfere as much with user preferences as FrontPage does. You can buy Dreamweaver directly from Macromedia or download a free trial version that has limited functionality. This is currently our favorite website builder program. If you're building a large website, you might want to buy FrontPage, Dreamweaver or another professional builder program. However, if you're just planning to build a small website (say, ten or twenty pages), there's no need to buy a costly, whiz-bang computer program to build your site for you. Just download a free web site building utility and you'll be well on your way. Download.com has many good options in this area.
