A good, well-thought-out Web site domain name can help you garner many more visitors to your site. If you name it right, they will come - in droves, hopefully - but if you have a boring or obscure website domain name, they might not want to come, or even be able to come at all!
So you've thought about what you want to say or offer on your website. Now how are you going to name it? Here are a few tips to coming up with a great domain name:
- Don't panic, but millions upon millions of names have already been claimed. Remember that big .com boom and bust of a few years back? Oh, and there are many domain names with people just squatting on them - not really doing anything with them, just holding onto them until someone comes along to buy them. If you want a certain domain name, just type in the desired URL and see if someone already has taken that name. Or check with Network Solutions , the granddaddy of domain name registrars, to see if a name is taken.
- If the name you want is taken, again, don't panic. If you have deep enough pockets, you might be able to buy it outright from its current owner. However, there's often a cheaper solution: just try to snatch up the .net, .org or other domain name extension varieties of the desired name if the .com version is taken, or vice versa.
- Try to avoid using confusing spellings or inconsistent formatting. If you use dashes, remember that people who type in the name of the site without the dashes may be directed to a completely different website.
